Headphones, like most things in life. are very subjective. What works for one person will not work for another. The best way to find out is to test them all. Go to the stores, bring your favorite songs, plug into each pair of studio headphones and start listening.
It’s well worth your time since you can assume you’ll be using these headphones for years. Consider it like buying a car or pair of expensive shoes; yes it might be a bit pricey initially but you’ll only have to do it once every ten years 🙂 I use one of my Shure headphones every single morning as part of my morning routine (coffee, emails, blog posts etc).
My personal favorites to have around the studio are Audio-Technica, Sony, and Shure. Although we do also have cheaper Behringer headphones for our drummers (that pair is only $9, they’re practically disposable!).
Don’t feel rushed or pressured to find the perfect pair in one shopping trip. Perhaps narrow down a few favorites and return the next day to try them again in a different “head space”. Depending on your mood, they can sound dramatically different the next day.
Once you’re confident you found your favorite pair: then you can purchase them without any guilt or remorse!
Happy Shopping! Let us know how it turns out!
